He was elected as a result of intrigues and condemned the authors. He marched against the
Saracens and surprisingly defeated them on the Garigliano.

He was elected as a result of the powerful intrigues of the earls of Tuscolo when Rome was
ruled by Marotia, the Marquise of Tuscia. He supported the monasteries of St Vincenzo al
Volturno, S. Gerardo di Bragne and two cenobies in Gaul.
